Presenting at Clapham School

Today our group gave a presentation to a class of middle schoolers at Clapham School, a private classical school that meets in College Church. Overall the presentation went fairly well, though we did have to ad lib some information and change aspects of the presentation as we went. We had some technological troubles in the beginning as we tried to connect to the projector and set up our prezi which was compounded by the fact that Clapham does not regularly use technology as a part of their educational process. Those first few minutes in the classroom were pretty awkward because we were just standing around (or trying to get the projector to work) and weren’t sure what we should be doing. We talked about the class (environmental stewardship) and explained some of the work we had been doing to integrate theology with creation care. We began our presentation by handing out cups and giving water to the kids to get them interested in the idea of water quality, then launched into our presentation. We explained the background and importance of the project, how it intersects with the concept of stewardship, explained how we conducted our research, discussed the results of the tests, and explored further implications and applications of this newly discovered knowledge. The students did not appear incredibly interested in our presentation (though that could have been influenced by the close proximity to the end of the school day), but after we were done they asked several thoughtful questions that allowed for further discussion of the topic. The teachers actually seemed more skeptical of our project and methods than the students did, which was interesting. To finish out the day, we got out the probe and showed the kids how it worked which of course was a big hit. Overall our presentation was successful in its mission to educate students about stewardship, water quality, and safe consumption practices when in nature.
