Hey everyone!
So our group (Jesse, Tyler, Abby, Shinyoung, Jake and myself) are doing a project on estimation of carbon storage in Wheaton. Our plan is to determine an approximate amount of carbon storage in the city, and to present this information to the community alongside an educational process to show the community why carbon storage is important. We are hoping to present at the Wheaton Public Library and invite people in the community by handing out flyers at homes and possibly in schools.
The reason this issue is relevant to Wheaton is because almost 7,000 green ash trees were removed in the last two years due to the emerald ash bore (a parasite) infecting them. We want to help educate the community on the decision they make for the replanting process, and show them how important carbon storage is. We want to make sure the community does replant, and we want to help educate them to decideĀ to plant native species instead of nonnative ones.
We are set to begin collecting our data tomorrow. We have a general formula where we measure the diameter at breast height and are able to calculate the levels of carbon storage. This is dependent per species, so we will also be identifying each tree we measure to get the correct approximation. We are measuringĀ on four different streets in the city, hoping to get approximately 100 trees measured, to get a solid sample size in order to have effective data.
So there is a little overview! We are excited!
